India, New Zealand continue winning ways despite ‘scare’ in World Cup matches

It was a good day for Cricket as all four teams playing World Cup matches did an excellent job. Afghanistan and West Indies were unlucky to lose from excellent positions, especially the latter who came too close for (New Zealand’s) comfort.

India won the low scoring World Cup match despite Afghan resurgence

It was a match the Afghans will remember for a long time, and the Indians will try to forget. Although they won it, India was on the verge of losing it till the last few overs. Electing to bat first, India were restricted to 224 runs for the loss of 8 wickets which is too low by their standards. No batsman besides Virat Kohli (67) and Kedar Jadhav (52) was able to cross 50, such was the quality of Afghan bowling.

Shami’s hat-trick ensured Afghanistan remained winless in the World Cup

Chasing 225 runs to win was always going to be tough for the Afghans, and Mohammad Nabi kept his side’s hopes high with his 52 runs. With his departure, went away his team’s chances of a win. Whatever hope they had left was snatched by Mohammad Shami’s hat-trick in the final over as he ended with 4 wickets in his first match of the event. The Afghans were bowled out for 213 but impressed all with their grit and determination.

Williamson’s consecutive ton steers New Zealand out of trouble

Kane Williamson’s consecutive World Cup century steered New Zealand to a comfortable position. Along with Ross Taylor (69), he added 160 runs in 34 overs to rescue his side from 7 for 2. Williamson’s 148 helped his side post 291 runs for the loss of 8 wickets on the board. Sheldon Cottrell was the pick of the bowlers with 4 wickets and he mostly accounted for the top order.

Carlos Brathwaite’s Century Nearly Wins West Indies The Match

At one time, it seemed that West Indies would win the match comfortably. When Carlos Brathwaite hit 25 runs in the 48th over, it all looked as good as over for the undefeated Kiwis. Brathwaite went for a six off the last ball of the 48th over, only to be caught at the boundary by Trent Boult. Earlier, it was due to Boult’s 4 wickets, that the West Indians were restricted to 286 that wouldn’t have been possible without Chris Gayle and Sheldon Hetmeyr’s fifties.

Kiwis Reach Top of The Points Table

The Kiwis won the match by 5 runs and reached the top of the Points Table where they now have 11 points after 6 matches. Australia and India with come second and third with 9 points, while England is comfortably placed at number 4 with 8 points. Today’s match between Pakistan and South Africa will help the winning side but the losing one might not be able to reach the last 4 of the mega event.
