World Cup 2019 – Former champions Sri Lanka among the winners

Finally, the Sri Lankans were amongst the winners in the Cricket World Cup being played in England. In a match against Afghanistan, they registered a victory that seemed difficult at one time.

A tough match between the two Asian teams

Sri Lanka used all their experience to deny Afghanistan a famous victory by winning a low-scoring thriller in the World Cup at Cardiff. The Afghans bowled well to restrict the former champions to 201 but were unable to chase the target.

Dismal batting from Sri Lanka, despite a promising start

Sri Lanka began in an excellent manner, scoring 92 runs in 13 overs before losing three quick wickets in one Mohammad Nabi over. They went from 144-1 to 149-5 in no time and ended at 201 all out, proving that you don’t need big names in the side to take wickets.

Former champions Sri Lanka won the match by 34 runs

Although Afghanistan required a rain-revised target of just 187 from 41 overs instead of 202, they still fell short by 34 runs. At one time, they were looking solid but Nuwan Pradeep’s four wickets proved to be too much for the newcomers.

And then there was Malinga touch

Lasith Malinga also ended up with three crucial wickets for Sri Lanka in his 6 overs as the minnows skittled for 152 all out in the 33rd over.

Najibullah’s decent knock couldn’t help his team

Even a decent partnership of 64 between Najibullah Zadran and captain Gulbadin Naib was unable to save the sinking Afghans. The former remained top scorer for his team with 43, while Hazratullah Zazai managed 30 valuable runs.

India to play their first match in Cricket World Cup today

Two-time World Champions India will start their World Cup campaign from today against South Africa. The Proteas have so far lost two matches in the event and will be looking forward to registering their first win. In another match, New Zealand will take on Bangladesh at The Oval with both teams hoping to make it two in two matches.
