Bangladesh make giant strides in World Cup thanks to Shakib Al Hasan

Shakib Al Hasan is no ordinary all-rounder, there is a reason why he is the best in the world. He was the main difference between Bangladesh and the West Indies as he stayed till the end, till Bangladesh had comfortably chased the target in the 42nd over.

It was a huge target to achieve in this World Cup

This World Cup has belonged to those sides who have batted first, but Bangladesh wanted to be better than others. After winning the toss, Bangladesh decided to field and seemed more in control of the match than Pakistan on Sunday. They restricted the usually aggressive West Indians to 321 for the loss of 8 wickets, and then chased the target with more than 8 overs to spare.

It was a Shakib Al Hasan special that helped Bangladesh

First, he took two of the important wickets to fall as a bowler and later destroyed the West Indian bowling with his batting. The batsmen he sent back were the dangerous Evin Lewis and Nicholas Pooran, whereas he demoralized the whole West Indian bowling with his batting. The West Indians might have been content with 321 runs for the loss of 8 wickets, but Shakib Al Hasan knew that it was achievable. And in 42 overs, he proved them wrong.

Shai Hope was top scorer for former two-time champions

West Indies wicketkeeper-batsman Shai Hope ended as the top scorer for Jason Holder’s men, producing a patient 96. Opener Evin Lewis and Shimron Hetmyer also scored half-centuries but that wasn’t enough for the Bangladeshis. Mohammad Saifuddin and Mustafizur Rehman were instrumental in restricting the opposition with three wickets apiece.

Then began the Shakib Al Hasan Show, with the bat!

Shakib Al Hasan scored his second consecutive World Cup century but this time in a winning cause for his team. Liton Das He brilliantly aided him with an unbeaten 94 as they thumped West Indies by seven wickets.

Chasing 322 to win, Shakib Al Hasan took complete control with an unbeaten 124 off 99 balls, his ninth ODI century, and guided his team home for the loss of just 3 wickets.

World Cup 2019 Points Table

With this victory, Bangladesh reached the fifth position and have 5 points from as many matches, one less than England and two less than second-placed New Zealand and India in third place. England could improve their position by defeating Afghanistan in their next match on Tuesday.
