Malinga Magic Shocks England, Helps Sri Lanka Gain Valuable Points

It was one of those days when Lasith Malinga and his magic were at their best. The veteran Sri Lankan bowler helped his side defeat the top-ranked team of the tournament and gain valuable points in the process. He, along with Angelo Mathews, was the star of this historic victory which was something they hoped than expected.

Sri Lanka Won The Toss, Elected To Bat First In A Sensible Move

Although the Sri Lankans were confident of doing well in the match, not even they were this confident of defeating England. In fact, after the chose to bat first and posted 232/9 in 50 overs, many of their supporters weren’t happy with the target. Yes, Angelo Mathews came back in form but they needed him to score a ton, than just 85 runs.

Archer, Wood Were Stars Of England Bowling

Jofra Archer and Mark Wood took three wickets each to restrict Sri Lanka to 232 runs for the loss of 9 wickets. Adil Rashid also chipped in with 2 important wickets for his side.

Malinga Magic Was Too Much For The Hosts To Handle

But Lasith Malinga had other ideas regarding the total’s successful defense. He bowled exceptionally well to end the match with 4 wickets, whereas the other bowlers did the rest. He not only took the England top three but the dangerous Joss Buttler to help Sri Lanka win the match and two crucial points.

Ben Stokes, Joe Root’s half-centuries in vain

Ben Stokes’s unbeaten 82 runs and Joe Root’s 57 were just not enough for England who fell short by 20 runs while chasing 233 to win. Had Mark Wood not been dismissed in the 47th over, the hosts might have had a chance especially since Ben Stokes was in an explosive mood.

World Cup Points Table

After this loss, the hosts are stuck at number 3 while Sri Lanka now has 6 points from as many matches. Today, India will face Afghanistan while New Zealand and West Indies will face each other in a crucial tie that will decide which team stays in the top 6 and which team doesn’t.
