England manages to become number 2 thanks to Joe Root

Spirited England set aside injury setbacks to register emphatic victory!

It was a one-sided match at Southampton between England and West Indies, where English bowlers and Joe Root helped the hosts win comfortably. The batsman scored his second century in three matches, this time in a winning cause that too in the absence of key players.

Where Pooran failed, Joe Root didn’t

It was always going to be a tough match for England with Chris Gayle and Nicolas Pooran in form, but Joe Root and the bowlers had other ideas.

Jofra Archer and Mark Wood shared 6 of the 10 wickets to fall as West Indies faltered from a formidable position to 212 all out. At one time, they were cruising at 143 for the loss of 3 wickets in 29 overs before losing wickets regularly. Nicolas Pooran was the only batsman to score a fifty, top scoring with 63 runs for the visitors.

Opener Joe Root helped England reach the target in 34 overs

With opener Jason Roy unable to bat due to injury, Joe Root opened the innings and added 95 runs for the first wicket with Jonny Bairstow. After Bairstow went back to the pavilion for 45, Root continued to bat aggressively. He added a further 104 runs for the second wicket with Chris Woakes who scored 40 important runs for his side.

His 16th ODI century and second in this World Cup came off 93 balls and helped his side reach the second position on the points table.

Captain Morgan, Jason Roy doubtful for next match

Captain Eoin Morgan and Jason Roy seem doubtful for their team’s next match against Afghanistan at Old Trafford next Tuesday. The two sustained injuries during the West Indian innings while fielding – Roy, damaging his hamstring, Morgan falling to back spasms.

Clash of defending and former champions to be followed by luckless teams

On Saturday, Australia will clash with Sri Lanka in the repeat of 1996 and 2007 finals, while unlucky South Africa will clash with luckless Afghanistan in the other match. Australia is currently placed at number 3 with 6 points, while Sri Lanka has 4 points from as many matches. South Africa and Afghanistan, on the other hand, have no wins, yet South Africa has one point as their match against West Indies ended without yielding a result.
