Is This The Best Squad for The Cricket World Cup?

Whenever the World Cup team is announced around the world, they select their best players and those with the experience of playing in the very conditions where the mega event is taking place. Sadly in Pakistan, we select the players we believe will do well on instincts rather than logic. That’s why after 1996, Pakistan has reached the Semi-Final of the event just twice and the final once as crashing out of the tournament seems to be their best way out with terrible selections.

Inzamam ul Haq the man who was part of more failed attempts at World Cup than successful ones selected the World Cup squad for the upcoming mega event and he did the same thing as his predecessors. He dropped the one bowler who the opposition fears – Mohammad Amir – and selected two veterans who have done nothing in the last few years – Shoaib Malik and Mohammad Hafeez.

Yes, Mohammad Hafeez was instrumental in Pakistan’s successful campaign in ICC Champions Trophy two years back but he only did well when he was told that it was his final chance. Shoaib Malik, on the other hand, was a failure in the recent series against Australia where he led the side in the absence of Sarfraz Ahmed. He rarely bowls, doesn’t score when needed and the only reason for his selection may be his fielding which is still better than many in the squad.

And then there was the omission of Usman Shinwari who was easily Pakistan’s best bowler in last few months. The more experienced Junaid Khan was preferred in a surprise move, which might be the best selection of Inzamam’s career as a Chief Selector. It remains to be seen how his selected team performs in England, but with more all-rounders than specialists in the squad, the team’s chances seem dim than bright.
