The 7th death anniversary of Shehenshah-e-Ghazal Mehdi Hassan Khan is being observed today.
Mehdi Hassan was surely among the greatest singers South Asia has ever seen. We will always remember him in our hearts for his uncountable contribution and services to the Pakistan music industry.
Having served the nation for many decades, the legendary singer received several awards including the Nigar Award for Best Performer.
His services were also recognized by the Government of Pakistan and he was also presented with the Pride of Performance Awards, Tamgha-e-Imtiaz and Hilal-i-Imtiaz.
Indian Government also bestowed upon him the K. L. Saigal Sangeet Shahenshah Award. Moreover, the Government of Nepal adorned him with the Order of Gorkha Dakshina Bahu, one of the highest honors given traditionally by the king in 1983.
Not just in Pakistan, the Shehenshah-e-Ghazal also has a vast number of followers in India including Lata Mangeshkar herself. The famous Indian singer once said about Mehdi Hassan that ‘It seems as if God Himself speaks in his voice.’

Mehdi Hassan was born on 18th July 1927 in Rajasthan, India and migrated to Pakistan after the partition.
He started his career on Radio Pakistan in 1957 as a Thumri singer and earned recognition in no time. He sang for over 300 films in his music career and his soulful ghazals are loved by many. However, the legend quit singing due to severe lungs disease in 1999.
