Defending Champions Dhawaned In Cricket World Cup

Defending Champions Downed By Dhawan Century

Defending Champions Australia Falter Against Superior India

The 14th match of the World Cup belonged to India as the two-time Champions downed the defending champions Australia by 36 runs. This win takes India to third place in the points table where New Zealand leads with 6 points. After their first loss of the mega event, Australia is down to the fourth place, just one point ahead of Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

Virat Kohli’s men performed perfectly against defending champions

It was a perfect day for Indian batsmen as they won the toss and made the most of the ideal batting conditions at The Oval. Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma added 127 for the first wicket, becoming the most successful opening pair of all time. Dhawan continued his run-scoring and scored a 109-ball 117 to guide India to 352 runs for 5 wickets in 50 overs.

Virat Kohli and Co. contributed valuable runs as well

Captain Virat Kohli also chipped in with 82 valuable runs while Rohit Sharma’s 57 made the mammoth total possible. Marcus Stoinis was the most successful bowler from Australia with 2 wickets to his name.

Defending Champions Australia faltered despite Carey Fireworks

Not even Alex Carey’s fastest half-century of the event could help Australia recover from David Warner’s slow batting at the top. David Warner scored 56 runs for his side but wasted too many deliveries in the process.

Smith, Khawaja tried to rebuild the innings but failed

Both Usman Khawaja and Steve Smith added 69 runs for the fourth wicket but with Khawaja’s dismissal for 42, the momentum shifted from the defending champions. Despite Steve Smith’s 69, the Australians lost wickets at regular intervals against accurate Indian bowling.

Alex Carey reminds the Cricket lovers of Adam Gilchrist

Australian Wicket-Keeper Alex Carey tried to do a Gilchrist but ran out of partners in his quest for a win. It was due to his unbeaten 35-ball 55 that the Aussies managed to score 316, otherwise the victory margin could have been huge. Bhuveshnar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah took 3 wickets each to seal another win for India.
